Breeding Program
The
Spanish Military is very influential in all aspects of
Andalusian breeding. Since the
Andalusian is primarily a warhorse, the Spanish Cavalry controlled the Stud
Book. The Military inspect all
registered horses and approve breeding stock.
The
Military runs their own breeding facilities (Yeguada Militar) and stallion
depots, the most famous of which is in Jerez.
The mission of these stallion depots is to improve the quality of the
breed and anyone can bring his mares and breed them to quality stallions for a
nominal fee.
Traditionally,
many of the best stallions were either purchased or bred by the Military.
Originally the Military used stock from Muira, Baones, Gurrero and Escalera
as the basis of their bloodlines. They
also periodically infused Carthusian/Bocado blood into their program.
